I was recently promoted as part of the longer term succession planning to be developed into a Duty Manager. I was shadowing a Duty Manager. I was frustrated, plodding along, in a rut. I was not sure what was expected of me and I felt that I might not be able to perform as well as others in this role. I work in a busy administration department with high levels of changing workload. There were teamwork issues within my team around quantity and quality of work, workload and communications that needed to be addressed. I wanted to improve the communications within my team, promote self reliance and be able to quantify workload. Without coaching, these issues would have continued.

Coaching introduced me to a model and techniques I could use that enabled the team to talk openly without confrontation, encouraged the team to look forward and plan to improve things together now and for the future. Coaching also helped me to realise how important it is to set goals for the team as a team and communicate more openly. My communication skills improved a great deal. Two members of the team participated in individual coaching sessions. There were different issues around communication skills and assertiveness with both customer service team members.
